VARICOSE AND SPIDER VEIN TREATMENTS IN OMAHA

WHAT ARE VARICOSE and SPIDER VEINS?

Varicose and spider veins are similar conditions that are extremely common. These conditions affect almost twice as many women compared to men, and are especially prevalent among older women. Both conditions are sometimes painful, as well as cosmetically unattractive. They can be small and minor, or relatively large, painful, and affect a patient’s quality of life. Varicose and spider veins occur when the valves of the veins become damaged and impede the normal blood flow in your legs. This damage can be caused by dilation of the blood vessels. Because the valves cease to function properly, blood can flow back into the lower section of the vein instead of traveling to the heart. Eventually blood gets stuck in the vein, and the buildup of pressure weakens the vein wall, which then causes the vein to swell.  The damage can occur primarily from standing for long periods of time, especially for four or more hours, pregnancy, aging, or being overweight or obese.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VARICOSE and SPIDER VEINS

Varicose veins are swollen veins that become twisted like a rope, creating bulges in the skin. The veins can be either blue, red or even skin-colored. They often occur in the thighs and along the shins or calves close to the ankles and feet. During pregnancy, varicose veins may appear on the buttocks, the lower pelvic area, and sometimes the inner thigh. Spider veins are thinner and more threadlike than varicose veins. They may resemble a spider web and are usually red in color. Though they appear close to the surface of the skin, they do not create bulging like varicose veins do.

WE TREAT SPIDER VEINS

Our dermatology specialists in Omaha offer varicose and spider vein treatments to our patients suffering from vein diseases. Spider veins are treated in office with a procedure known as sclerotherapy. The problem veins are directly injected with a solution which causes irritation to the vessel lining, making them swell and stick together. This swelling seals the veins shut and stops the flow of blood, thereby leading to their resolution. To get the best results, compression stockings should be worn for 2-3 weeks after the procedure.
