LIGHT THERAPY FOR ACNE

Light therapy, also called phototherapy, is commonly used as an acne treatment. If you struggle with breakouts or acne scarring, this treatment may help by using artificial light to affect the skin, which kills bacteria and promotes collagen growth. MOD Dermatology is proud to offer our clients light therapy treatments, a well-tested and effective skin treatment.

WHAT IS LIGHT THERAPY?

Light therapy is the usage of blue and red light to kill the bacteria within the skin, eliminating breakouts and healing acne scarring. The wavelength of the light therapy used determines how deep the light will reach within the skin and what it will affect. Red light penetrates deeper into the skin compared to blue light due to its longer wavelengths. Red light stimulates the production of collagen and helps reduce inflammation. Blue light targets bacteria within the skin that contributes to acne.

WHAT CAUSES ACNE AND HOW DOES LIGHT THERAPY WORK TO FIGHT IT?

You might have noticed that your skin starts to clear up in the summertime. This is partially due to the fact that UV rays can help clear up acne; however, UV rays also have negative side effects, including an increased risk of skin cancer and accelerating the appearance of aging. When using certain wavelengths of red and blue light, light therapy performed at our Omaha office can be used to treat the skin without harming it.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Light therapy typically works best for those with mild to moderate acne. During your appointment, our dermatology providers will discuss possible treatment options available at our Omaha office, including light therapy, depending on the severity of your acne. Each light therapy session typically lasts 15 to 30 minutes. Depending on the severity of your acne, several rounds of light therapy may be recommended.
