PEDIATRIC ERYTHEMA MULTIFORME TREATMENT IN FREMONT

WHAT IS PEDIATRIC ERYTHEMA MULTIFORME?

Pediatric erythema multiforme (EM) is a skin rash caused by an allergic reaction. It’s a relatively uncommon condition that affects fewer than 1% of the population per year, but it’s more common among children. Approximately 20% of cases occur in children and young adults. EM causes a skin rash of pinkish blotches that become darker over the course of a few days, and ultimately resemble targets. The targets have a dark red spot in the middle of pink rings surrounding it. The rash usually begins on the arms, legs, hands, or feet, and can then spread to the face, neck, and other areas. It can also be found on both sides of the body, like a mirror. The spots can be itchy or burn, or may not cause any pain or discomfort, and the rash can last for several months. Erythema multiforme doesn’t typically cause scarring.

Erythema multiforme has many causes, including a reaction to:

  • The virus that causes cold sores (HSV)
  • Some medications like ibuprofen (NSAIDs)
  • Some anti-seizure medications
  • Anesthesia
  • Patients with other immunosuppressed conditions

DIAGNOSIS OF EM NEEDS A DOCTOR

While some other conditions can be identified by parents, EM needs a doctor to diagnose to be sure. If your child is having symptoms of EM, schedule your appointment with MOD Dermatology to determine whether it’s EM or a different type of skin rash. Our Fremont dermatologists offer pediatric erythema multiforme treatment, and we encourage parents to bring their children in to see our specialists because EM can be misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed because of variability in presentation and potential overlap with other skin issues. It’s also important to keep in mind that early diagnosis can help minimize discomfort for your child.

MOD Dermatology offers pediatric erythema multiforme treatment in Fremont and other skin rash treatments. Once our specialists diagnose the issue, we’ll determine the underlying cause. For instance, an allergy to a medication requires discontinuing the use of that medication. If pediatric erythema multiforme is severe, we may prescribe antihistamines or topical corticosteroids for the itching.
