ISOTRETINOIN MEDICATION FOR SEVERE ACNE TREATMENT IN FREMONT

When someone is suffering from serious acne, and no other treatments are working, isotretinoin is an acne medication dermatologists turn to. That includes cystic and nodular acne, or the soft to firm lumps under the skin that can be quite painful. The good news is there is possible relief from a dermatologist by using isotretinoin orally.

Isotretinoin is a severe acne medication that is prescribed by Fremont-area dermatologists, and it’s been praised for its high success rates. Those using the medication often find significant improvement in their acne symptoms, and some even experience complete clearing of acne. After one typical course of isotretinoin, which can last four to nine months, some patients experience long-term remission of acne.

What is Isotretinoin?

Isotretinoin acne treatment prescribed at our Fremont clinic is a severe acne medication and is available only by prescription. It’s a holistic approach to fighting acne, working by limiting oil production, disallowing pores to easily become clogged, decreasing bacteria, and reducing inflammation.

WHAT CAUSES ACNE AND HOW DOES ISOTRETINOIN WORK TO OVERCOME IT?

Acne has multiple causes, and one main one is oil production in the skin. That oil is called sebum, and excess sebum production can lead to acne by clogging your pores. Pores can also be clogged by the shedding of skin cells, and when pores are clogged, they fill with bacteria and cause acne.

Isotretinoin first reduces sebum production and normalizes the shedding of skin cells to keep pores clearer. It reduces the bacteria (P. acnes), which feed on sebum, and isotretinoin also has anti-inflammatory properties to reduce swelling.

Taking Isotretinoin Safely

Because isotretinoin is a severe acne treatment, there are important mild-to-moderate side effects to consider when taking it. If our dermatologists prescribe isotretinoin acne treatment at our Fremont clinic, you will be required to:

  • Visit your dermatologist monthly
  • Enroll in the iPledgeTM  program
  • Use two forms of birth control and take pregnancy tests (females only)
  • Have blood work done at the start of the medication to check liver function, and fasting lipids

Patients on isotretinoin also need to avoid:

  • Excessive sun exposure and tanning beds due to the skin’s increased sensitivity to UV light
  • Laser and wax treatments during and up to six months after your last dose due to the increased risk of skin scarring
  • Vitamin A supplements because the medication is derived from vitamin A
