What is Rosacea?

Characterized by intense redness and visible blood vessels on the face, rosacea can affect someone at any age, but is more prevalent in middle-aged women. This type of skin condition can occur in flare-ups and remissions.

What are the Subtypes of Rosacea?

There are 4 different subtypes of rosacea that a person might experience:

1. Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea: As the most common form of rosacea, this subtype involves the flushing and redness of the face. 
2. Papulopustular (Acne): Sometimes mistaken for acne, this subtype is characterized by red bumps and pustules.
3. Phymatous (Rhinophyma): Disfiguration of the nose along with enlarged pores and thickening of the skin.
4. Ocular rosacea: Inflammation of the eyes that causes irritation and redness.

What Causes Rosacea?

While it is unknown what exactly is the root cause of rosacea, there are certain “triggers” which cause flare-ups in the body. These might include spicy foods, alcohol, environmental factors, stress, and other biological conditions. Those with a family history of rosacea are more likely to experience it themselves.
