Rosacea is a common inflammatory skin condition that is found in 16 million Americans. This condition is characterized by redness and visible blood vessels most commonly found on the face. WHAT IS ROSACEA?

This chronic skin condition most often manifests itself in excessive redness of the face due to enlarged blood vessels on the skin. Thankfully, this condition is not contagious so cannot be spread by airborne or physical contact. This long-term condition typically comes in flare-ups and remissions.

WHAT ARE THE SUBTYPES OF ROSACEA?

There are four main subtypes of rosacea that a person can experience, and they can experience more than one at a time. These include:

  1. Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea:  This is the most common type of rosacea and is characterized by facial redness and spider veins
  2. Papulopustular (Acne): A subtype in which its symptoms are similar to that of acne breakouts
  3. Phymatous (Rhinophyma): The rarest form of rosacea often causing the thickness of the nose
  4. Ocular rosacea: Rosacea affects the eyes which cause dry, stinging eyes and possible loss of vision

WHAT CAUSES ROSACEA?

The exact cause of rosacea is still unknown, but it is thought to be caused due to several factors including an overactive immune system, genetics, and environmental factors. The demographics of those more likely to experience rosacea include:

  • 30 to 50 years old
  • Fair-skinned
